Holding Northwestern University
Administration Accountable

Northwestern University is home to the nation's leading journalism school, yet many are dumbfounded by its handling of the recent hijacking of its student newspaper, The Daily Northwestern. The Coalition Against Antisemitism at Northwestern (CAAN) sent a letter to University leadership to share our concerns and demand that they take action.

Two Northwestern University students were charged with a class A misdemeanor when they flooded campus at the end of October 2023 with misleading, duped copies of the Daily, chock filled with antisemitic and triggering messages that demonized Israel, claimed that the University was complicit in genocide in Gaza, and included phony quotes from University leadership.

The defendants were set to appear before a Cook County, Illinois judge the end of this month. Smacking of hypocrisy, the perpetrators turned into the victims, and a Change.org petition, along with massive amounts of public pressure, led to dropping of the charges.

To date, University leadership has taken no responsibility in addressing the transgressions, which are in clear violation of the Student Code of Conduct. Now that the justice system and the Student Publishing Company, which is the parent company to The Daily, have washed their hands of the situation, it is up to University leadership to decide if the perpetrators will face any consequences and begs the question: How did the substance of the crimes committed and the real victims of this harassing hoax get lost, and what kind of damage is done when the University allows diligent student journalists to be tarnished by these perpetrators?

CAAN is sharing our letter to University leadership with you so that you can adapt and edit as you see fit, sign, and share your concerns with the administration. Thank you for working with us to combat antisemitism at Northwestern.
